Statement of Faith

The Reformation Project is a Bible-based, Christian organization. We are ecumenical in nature and mission — inclusive of Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox Christians alike.

Our Statement of Faith is intentionally economical — it reflects the core convictions of orthodox Christianity that we hold in common with the broader church.

The inspiration of the Bible, the Word of God.

The Triune God, eternally existent as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The supremacy of God, who created all things seen and unseen through Christ our Lord.

The deity of Jesus Christ, only begotten Son of the invisible God, firstborn over all creation, fully God and fully man, head of the church, author and finisher of our faith; His death for our sins; and His resurrection and eventual return.

The regenerative power of the Holy Spirit, whose fruit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Our Theological Conviction

Orthodox and affirming are not opposites.

The most common objection to The Reformation Project's work is that affirming gay, bisexual, and transgender Christians requires abandoning the authority of Scripture or departing from orthodox Christian faith. We believe the opposite is true.

Our commitment to full inclusion flows from — not despite — our orthodox theological convictions. We affirm the inspiration and authority of Scripture. We affirm the Triune God, the full deity and humanity of Christ, and salvation by grace through faith. And we believe a careful reading of that same Scripture supports the full affirmation of gay, bisexual, and transgender Christians.

We are not asking the church to choose between the Bible and inclusion. We are inviting the church to discover that it does not have to.

What We Mean

What does "fully affirming" mean?

When we say we are working toward a fully affirming church, we mean something specific — grounded in Scripture and consistent with orthodox Christian theology.

Recognizing that it is not a sin to be gay, bisexual, or transgender

The church has often taught that same-sex attraction is itself sinful — a teaching that has caused enormous harm and that we believe misreads Scripture. Being gay or bisexual is not a sin to be confessed or an orientation to be changed.

Blessing monogamous, covenantal same-sex marriages

We believe the Bible's core teaching on marriage centers on covenant love, mutual self-giving, and lifelong commitment. Same-sex marriages that embody these values are consistent with the spirit and letter of Scripture.

Allowing gay, bisexual, and transgender Christians to serve on equal terms

Full inclusion means full participation — in church membership, in leadership, in ministry. Gay, bisexual, and transgender Christians have spiritual gifts that the body of Christ needs, and the church is impoverished when it excludes them.
